Simple Steps to Start a Business
More and more FEMS arrive in our communities with the goal of launching a business. We see patterns of women in their early 20’s, mid 40’s and late 60’s deciding that this is the moment to launch a business.
For many, its an overwhelming feeling of paralysis with a lack of tools to get started. While fear and challenges will await as they do in all new ventures, the lack of tools I hope to clarify and alleviate.
There are a few stages in launching a business. I have broken them down into simple steps to make it easier for those launching a business. This is a topic that could go on for a year in a series of classes. I have taught it as a 6 week course and created a webinar too as the subject is extension. For those looking for a concise step by step process of how it can roll out and flow, this one’s for you.
Here are some questions to ask yourself; what will your business do? Why are you starting the business? How will it change the lives for the clients you serve? How will it improve lives? How will it generate revenue? These questions are to get your mind shifting towards the benefit it will have for others and your confirming your “Why”.
Once you have the basic business plan and development crafted, the next step is generally in the research. Who else is doing what you want to do? How are they doing it? What would make yours better? How will the marketing look different?
If you haven’t felt overwhelmed yet, this may be the phase where it hits home. This phase may make you feel like giving up is the best option. Think of WAZE app taking over some clients from Google Map App. Think of Netflix taking over from Blockbuster clients. Target vs. JCPenney. You see what I am getting at? Research price points, marketing campaigns, demographics and immerse yourself in this for awhile. The more in depth you go, the less mistakes you will make. Products and services can always be improved and serve our community better. Once this phase is done, and you feel comfortable with stepping forward, register your new business.
3.MARKETING PHASE 1
Start to create the branding vision board for your new business. What colors, slogans and presentation will it have? You may want to hire an expert for this part to create logo, branding guidelines and the feel of your business and its vibe. The branding works best when it resonates with your target audience. Is it something they will connect with upon first glance? Is it something they will instantly want to try? It’s about fitting into their world of likes and connections. You may want to consider hiring a great copywriter to create a slogan and a good summary in addition to services offered.
4.MARKETING PHASE 2
Phase 2 includes creating the website which can be done in phases as well. You can follow along with the marketing by creating social media platforms for your business. Many will feel pressured to create an account on every single social media channel. A great tip is to start with only two platforms that really feel like a connection to you. The branding also does the best when all areas of marketing; website, email, logo, font, font colors look like a family. Your brand should flow effortlessly in image from one platform to another. This is also a great time to consider a PR Consultant to get your business in newspapers, magazines and online publications. Forming partnerships and innovative marketing campaigns to engage followers and potential clients is a great additional activity to bring it all together in preparation.
You are ready to launch!
Once you launch, your work isn’t over. Continue to review, edit, tweak and strive to serve your clients better.
There are always ways to grow stronger, better and more efficiently. As you grow, hire people on a contractual or consulting basis. You will need help along the way to drive closer to your vision.
As you go through these steps, create a dream team of experts to work with you for various phases and projects. You will need support and an expert team to get your business launched. I hope this helps you in getting started and moving in the right direction.
